How to take care of your spine today

Walking, running, picking up your kids, doing yoga; your spine is an amazing part of your body that has a key responsibility for these activities.

When your spine is out of whack, it can feel like your whole body is out of whack, so it’s important to make sure to take care of it. Without a healthy spine, you can’t do all the things you need to do.

It may be surprising that there are actually many things we do on a day-to-day basis that are not very good for our spines. Over time, these things wear it down and can cause some serious problems.

The good news is there are things we can do every day to reverse some of those effects and take care of our spines.

Here are a few ways you can take care of your spine starting today.

Watch the way you sit

Even something as simple as the way you sit could be irritating your spine, so it’s important to be mindful of your posture or how many hours you spend sitting versus standing.

If you have a job that requires you to sit for long periods of time, make sure you have a chair that offers good support to your spine and even consider a stand-up desk. Even something like switching out your regular chair for an exercise ball for half the day can really help your spine out.

Put on the heat

Heat on your spine not only feels really good but it can also be super soothing and healing to an overworked spine and the muscles that surround it.

Applying a heating pack, heating pad, hot water bottle, or even taking a hot bath are all great options for putting heat on your spine to help the blood flow around it, bringing healing nutrients to the muscles in your spine.

Walk and then walk some more

Walking is good for many parts of your body and especially for your spine.

It helps to work your muscles, get the blood flowing, and get important nutrients to the muscles and bones in your spine.

The good news is you don’t have to walk very far or very fast, and even if you have back problems or other serious injuries, you can take your walks in pools which take the pressure of your ailing bones and joints but still give you all the benefits of walking.

Talk to the doctor

If you are having some serious pain in your spine, make sure you give your doctor a visit before more seriously injuring it.

If, after having it checked by your doctor, you find that the injuries are pretty serious, you might want to talk to your doctor about something such as regenerative medicine, which can help heal and ease the pain of certain spinal issues, and any other treatment options.

Exercise, exercise, exercise

Exercise is a great habit to start for your overall health, but especially for your spinal health.

This doesn’t mean you have to start working out like crazy doing difficult exercises. The best way is to start with a simple exercise routine that involves strengthening exercises and stretching of the muscles.
